After years of mistreating my hair and having to chop most of it off four years ago, taking care of my hair is something that has become very important to me- mainly because I have so much of it. It’s long, thick, curly and unruly- which makes it very high maintenance, but, never time consuming thanks to the products that I’m about to mention. Whether you’re looking to add shine, tame frizz, protect from heat, or reduce tangling, here are six of my all time favourite products that help keep my hair looking and feeling healthy.
Without fail, argan oil helps reduce the appearance of split ends and helps tame any frizz. It also adds shine and leaves your hair glowing and looking healthy without looking greasy. I would recommend using this if you have unruly hair or if your hair is lacking in shine. I apply this just to the ends of my hair when it’s still wet, first by applying some on my hands and then running my fingers lightly through the ends of my hair. If I’m heat styling my hair with straighteners or a blow dryer I will usually apply a little more afterwards.
Philip Kingsley elasticizer
Philip Kingsley has to be one of my favourite hair brands of all time. I’ve seen a huge difference in the condition of my hair since using the elasticizer and I would recommend anyone to try it. While it’s a little pricey, it’s definitely worth it for hair that feels conditioned, bouncy and healthy. I started using this about a year ago and I don’t know how I managed without it! I apply this generously to the ends of my hair before shampooing when my hair is already wet. I then wait 10-20 minutes before washing it out with shampoo. I use this product probably once a week and although 20 minutes is a long time to wait, I will usually use that time to exfoliate and to shave. The most noticeable difference for me is how manageable my hair becomes when I style it; my straighteners glide through my hair and my hair is left looking like I’ve just left the salon.
Philip Kingsley daily damage defence
I can’t stress enough how important it is to use a heat protector spray when heat styling your hair. For years I ignored this advice, to the point where I got so many split ends that I had to have my hair cut to my shoulders so that it could grow healthy again. I always switch up my heat protector spray and this is the one I’ve been using for the past while. It’s long-lasting and smells lovely so I would happily recommend this one if you also want a spray that conditions your hair without leaving it sticky.
Philip Kingsley dry shampoo
While I was a huge fan of Batiste before, I have now switched up my dry shampoo to Philip Kingsley after having tried someone else’s. I like this one better because it leaves my hair refreshed and it doesn’t make it sticky or hard at the roots. Sometimes I find that with Batiste my hair feels like I have a lot of product in and it sometimes leaves my hair looking slightly grey. This dry shampoo is undetectable yet it does the job.
Chanel hair mist
This hair mist is a must for special occasions when you want your hair to smell extra fabulous. This is perfume for your hair, and it smells just like Allure eau du parfum; fresh and floral. I spray this onto my hair from a distance and I then run my fingers through it. Since we all know that smells get trapped in our hair, you can also use this on a daily basis, especially if you are a smoker.
GHD paddle brush
Aside from my tangle teaser this is the only brush I will use to detangle my hair. The bristles are wide enough that it allows your hair to glide through without pulling on it and causing split ends. I use my tangle teaser in the shower when I have wet hair and then I will use this paddle brush on a daily basis or just before heat styling my hair.
I have saved the best and the cheapest till last. An unusual choice but really, this is the one thing you want to use if you want to heat style your hair less frequently and if you want to avoid knots and kinks. I sleep in my hair net most nights, and it means my hair doesn’t 1) tangle throughout the night 2) I don’t wake up with kinks and knots 3) I don’t have to use my straighteners in-between washes. The hair net keeps my hair in place, so when I take it out in the morning my hair looks just as straight as it did the first day I heat styled it. I used to wake up with kinks and knots in my hair that I would have to straighten out every morning, and in turn causing more damage to my hair from heat styling it so much. This is no longer the case and I’m so happy I discovered this trick! I would definitely try this out if you have hair like mine and you’ve straightened or blow dried your hair and want it to last for as long as possible.
